Traditionally, in the Orthodox Christian faith, iconography depicts a transformation of the saints and martyrs after being touched by the hand of God.
For the iconographer, Dimitrios Mourlas, iconography is a spiritual calling and every brush stroke an act of prayer.

How Iconography has touched so many lives
For many, one of the most enlightening moments of the film, PISTEVO “I Believe,” was learning that the iconographer, Dimitrios Mourlas, took moments of silence while he worked. For Dimitrios, he wasn’t just painting; it was an act of prayer.
Some may also assume that iconography is simply an art form involving portraits, but that would be incorrect. Iconography began as a tool—a way to teach the stories of Christianity to those who couldn’t read. Each scene depicts a valuable lesson in the life of Christ and is considered writing, not painting. It is a form of scripture and a way of preserving the history of Christ and honoring the theology of the Orthodox Christian Church.
